The historic
municipality of Marathon is located
in the northeastern part of Attica, about 45 km from the center of Athens. This
world-famous site of historical significance, where the famous battle of Marathon was held in 490 BC
when the outnumbered Athenian army 
defeated the mighty Persians and managed to put an end to their first
invasion of Greek territory, is an ideal choice for a daily tour. Reference
point here is the Tomb of Marathon
under which the bones of the 192 soldiers who fell during the battle against
the Persians are found.

Of great interest is also the Archaeological Museum where visitors can admire part of the trophy of the Battle of Marathon, ceramics from the Neolithic age found in the cave of Panos, as well as some of the early Cycladic pottery of Geometric and Classical times.  

Marathon is directly linked to the endurance Marathon race - which is included in
the Olympic sports - the name of which is due to the feud of soldier
Pheidippides, as he ran from Marathon to Athens after the end of the battle to
announce the outcome with the word “nenikekamen”
(meaning “we have won”) but after announcing his message he collapsed and
died of exhaustion. To this day, the Marathon runners follow the same
route. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Marathon Run Museum where you can see the history of the Olympic
Marathon from 1896 to 2000.

Another
attraction is the artificial lake of
Marathon, covering 2,450 acres, which is among the 10 most important
wetlands of Attica due to the species that hosts. It was created in 1931 and
was the main source of water supply for Athens until 1959.
